Kong Sez:
Do you recall Mr. "B" speaking of this in past ChemBioUpdates! He now tells me Famine is coming to the land. "Be prepared for six (6) years," he says.
Read below and see if you are beginning to get the chills I'm beginning to get. It doesn't look good.
As you read below, keep in mind the crop that needs the most water is Corn. Many areas in the U.S. are in drought conditions...and now...The Wheat....
Wheat Harvest! Beaumont Enterprise Wednesday May 27, 2009 Page 6B
The wheat crop in the Texas and Oklahoma portion of the Great Plains has been so damaged by drought and a late freeze that the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts the harvest will be only 1/3 of the usual harvest.
Drought had already damaged wheat fields in Texas, then a late-season freeze added more damage.
The harvest is down so much, custom harvesters from Kansas who follow the trail of ripening wheat face a big cut in work available.
It is interesting to note that in the 1930s, a similar pattern of drought combined with an economic downturn produced the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl included parts of Texas and Oklahoma, the same parts that are experiencing drought now.
And from The Agonist, some really good paragraphs...More on the Wheat harvest...A farmer's report:
"I had planned to plant a summer crop on the remaining 50 acres, but on the last possible planting date, I changed my mind and planted spring wheat instead. The wheat grew well, but an unusually warm winter caused the crop to head out early and then an unusually late freeze (actually two of them) froze the immature heads of wheat. Now we’re left with four foot tall plants; crush one of those big heads and you’ll be lucky to see a couple of grains in your hand. A field full of fucking straw.
"Two consecutive years this has happened. I’ve yet to begin harvesting the spring wheat, but the irrigated winter wheat sucked and I already know the yield will be poor. The crop was grown entirely on irrigation water, and irrigation water is not free when you pump it out of the ground."
For the complete story, see The Agonist.
